-"H" and "D" words are NOT swear words here. It always throws me off. It is so funny when Phil says stuff like, "Heck no" because I have to remember that to him he's not really swearing haha!
Kiwi sayings that I love. . .
- "sweet as" --cool or awesome
- "up with the play" --up to date
- "have a go" --try it out
- "cheers" --goodbye or thanks or good luck
- **"choice" --very good (I love this one!)
- "aye" and "oi"
- "good on ya or good on ya mate" --well done or congratulations
- "wonky" --crooked
- "heaps" --lots and lots
- "flash" --looks really good (e.g. "that's flash")
Maori words commonly used. . .
- "kia ora" --greetings, hi, g'day, hello
- "kapai" --good or great job (usually said with exclamation)
- "paki paki" --clap or give this person a clapping hand
- "kai" --food
- "aotearoa" --New Zealand
- "whanau" --family
- "whaea" --showing/giving respect for a woman adult (e.g. a lot of the teachers at my school were called whaea Loo or whaea Brooke or whaea Mandy :))
- "Etu" --stand up (Mrs. Tararo always said this in class)
- "Anoho" --sit down
- "aroha" --love
- "Haere mai" --welcome
- "Haere ra" --farewell
